Small town ambiance

If you think Albany, California was named for the city's first Mayor, Frank Roberts who was from Albany, New York; you would be right. Albany is a city of 5.5 square miles of which 1.8 miles is land and 3.7 miles is water and is known for its' small town ambiance in a metropolitan area. Located on the Eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, East of the Golden Gate Bridge, with Berkeley to the South and East and El Cerrito and Richmond to the North. Albany has a population of 19,192, (2013) of which there were 7,889 housing units and a median household income of $80,244 (2013).  

Solano Avenue, a popular shopping corridor of small "Mom & Pop" shops, restaurants and services is walking friendly while San Pablo Avenue is more automobile oriented and is near the Eastshore freeway and houses a two-story Target store.

On the 2nd Sunday of September enjoy "The Solano Avenue Stroll", which is a "Thank you party" from the Solano Avenue business owners to customers and has attracted over 100,000 annual visitors since 1975.  Albany has a rich history of school music programs, both instrumental and choral which have performed at prestigious music and jazz festivals and played at Lincoln Center in 2010, one of 15 schools accepted into the 'Essentially Ellington' festival.

I-80 and I-580 are easily accessed from Albany as well as San Pablo Avenue/HWY-123,  which is a major thoroughfare that runs through the middle of the City and provides access to the surrounding communities.



The public schools are operated by the Albany Unified School District and have an reputation of high student test scores at all academic levels, which are among the highest in California.
